It’s that time of the year again! The CrossFit Open is here, and at Monkey Flag, it’s kinda a BIG DEAL! It’s our spirit month, celebrating team-work, embracing challenges, and having an awesome time while we’re at it. Last year we had 82 athletes in 4 teams fight it out for bragging rights, this year it’s going to be bigger and even better!

What is the CrossFit Open?

The Open is a community-level competition for everyone in the CrossFit world, hosted by thousands of affiliates across the world. Starting from 28th February and spanning across three weekends, CrossFit releases a workout (Friday morning Indian Standard Time). Each competitor has until the following Monday to perform the workout in the presence of a judge and upload scores to the worldwide leaderboard. Each workout has an option to be completed in one of three categories –

Rx – For athletes that do workouts as written. This is the most challenging option, yet we see many individuals have moved from Scaled to Rx’d as they progress from year to year.

Scaled – For athletes not quite ready to tackle the workouts as written. The Scaled division offers classic scaling options such as jumping pull ups, single-unders and includes lighter loading. 

Foundations – If you have just started CrossFit or maybe this is your first Open? The Foundations workouts are a great place to start. 

Depending on your capacities and where you are at in your fitness journey, you can choose to do each workout in any of these categories.

What’s the Monkey Flag Intramural?

The most fun you’ve ever had at our box!

A team Competition for all our Monkey Flag athletes! What do you win? Pride, joy and BRAGGING RIGHTS for the year!

Each team will have two captains from within the community and a coach to help them with our weekly challenges. For the challenges, bring all of your skills to the table – fitness, Wordle, maths, CrossFit history, coffee, cooking, artistic abilities – and any secret talents. Your team needs you! Captains can choose to hold on to a couple of athletes (these can be your closest friends) before all the participants, including coaches will be randomly drawn into teams. So, do not fret – each one of you will get a place in a team and a chance to showcase your skills.


Each week teams can win points for by :

  1. An athlete performing the Open WOD – 1 point
  2. An athlete placing in the top 3 (within our box) in their age group category in the Open WOD – 3 points
  3. An athlete attends 5 classes in the week – 2 points
  4. Judge the Open workout – 2 points
  5. Team winning the side challenges set aside for the week – 10 points
  6. Weekly Spirit of the Open award – 10 points to the team that creates the most noise, support
    and outstanding efforts in the workouts and on social media !
  7. Community appreciation for Outstanding shows of sportsmanship, grit, resilience, community support and cheer – 3 points for athletes with highest votes from the other competitors.

When is all this FUN happening?

The last dates to register if you want to be a part of our teams competition is – 20th Feb!!

The Open will run from 28th Feb 2025 to 17th March 2025

How do I prep for the competition?

If you’ve been attending our classes regularly, you’ve been preparing for the Open without knowing it! Yet, for some of our members, the Open is a great annual measuring stick to test their improvements in fitness.
If you’re dying to get your first toes-to-bars, or link your pull-ups, tell your coach and book a quick goal review! Maybe even sign up for a couple of 1 on 1 sessions if you’d want to. If you have any doubts regarding the Open, feel free to contact our coaches at the box.
