Dekho! Woh aa gaya! It’s that time of the year again! The CrossFit Open is here!!

At Monkey Flag, it’s kinda a BIG DEAL! It’s our spirit month, celebrating team-work, embracing challenges, and having an awesome time while we’re at it.

Last year, we had 170 athletes in 5 teams fight it out for bragging rights. This year it’s going to be bigger and better (how is that even possible?) ! We’re aiming to cross the 200 mark, as we defend our title of highest participation from an affiliate in Asia!

What is the CrossFit Open?

The Open is a community-level competition for everyone in the CrossFit world, hosted by thousands of affiliates across the world. Starting from 27th February and spanning across three weekends, CrossFit releases a workout (Friday morning Indian Standard Time). Each competitor has until the following Monday to perform the workout in the presence of a judge and upload scores to the worldwide leaderboard. Each workout has an option to be completed in one of three categories –

Rx – For athletes that do workouts as written. This is the most challenging option, yet we see many individuals have moved from Scaled to Rx’d as they progress from year to year.

Scaled – For athletes not quite ready to tackle the workouts as written. The Scaled division offers classic scaling options such as jumping pull ups, single-unders and includes lighter loading. 

Foundations – If you have just started CrossFit or maybe this is your first Open? The Foundations workouts are a great place to start. 

Depending on your capacities and where you are at in your fitness journey, you can choose to do each workout in any of these categories.

Weekly Flow

  • Friday Morning: Open workout begins
  • Friday – Sunday: Complete and validate your workout

We aim to complete all Open workouts by Sunday evening so: (some emergencies can be accommodated on Monday)

  • Athletes can train together over the weekend
  • Judges and teams can coordinate smoothly
  • Regular classes can resume without disruption on Monday

What’s the Monkey Flag Community Cup?

The most fun you’ve ever had at our box!

A team Competition for all our Monkey Flag athletes! What do you win? Pride, joy and BRAGGING RIGHTS for the year!

Each team will have a captain (an experienced member from within the community) to help connect and co-oridinate efforts. For the challenges, bring all of your skills to the table – fitness, Wordle, maths, CrossFit history, coffee, cooking, artistic abilities, ramp walk skills? – and any secret talents. Your team needs you! Captains can choose to hold on to a couple of athletes (these can be your closest friends) before all the participants are randomly drawn into teams. So, do not fret – each one of you will get a place in a team and a chance to showcase your skills.


How do you win points?

Individuals –

  1. 1 point – Compete in the CrossFit Open WOD of the week.
  2. 3 points – Place in the Top 3 of your category on the CrossFit leaderboard
  3. 2 points – Judge other athletes and help maintain movement standards
  4. 2 points – Meet your weekly attendance criteria ( 5 classes every week)
  5. 15 points – Spirit of the Open (Individual) – voted by the community
  6. 15 points – Rookie of the Year – awarded once at the end of the Open

Teams points (May be distributed between teams at the coaching teams’ discretion) –

  1. 5 points – Social media participation
  2. 30 points – Side challenges (Obstacle courses, quizzes etc and special Open challenges )
  3. 20 points – Spirit of the Open, awarded by the coaching team for showing up to support, be involved, and show amazing #fitfam behaviour — not social media activity!

When is all this FUN happening?

The last dates to register if you want to be a part of our teams competition is – 20th Feb!!

The Open will run from 28th Feb 2025 to 15th March 2025, followed by our after party!

How do I prep for the competition?

If you’ve been attending our classes regularly, you’ve been preparing for the Open without knowing it! Yet, for some of our members, the Open is a great annual measuring stick to test their improvements in fitness.
If you’re dying to get your first toes-to-bars, or link your pull-ups, tell your coach and book a quick goal review! Maybe even sign up for a couple of 1 on 1 sessions if you’d want to. If you have any doubts regarding the Open, feel free to contact our coaches at the box.

Reminder! Our focus is on FUN. We want you to participate not just because it will make you fitter, but you’ll be happy, love life more and glow more. Come together with your buddies, and make this year’s CrossFit Open our very own, with all the team spirit and joy!
